No-Nonsense Bib Crochet Pattern

Hey crocheters! This bib is one of the most functional, hardy, practical items I've ever designed.  And I use the term "designed" loosely.  This bib is no-frills and no-nonsense.  I had three requirements in mind for this bib:

  1. It had to be washable.  No lacy "doodads" and weaved ends to unravel in the washing machine.

  2. It had to be big enough to cover the entire shirt and shoulders.

  3. IT HAD TO NOT COME OFF. EVER.  My daughter laughs in the face of Velcro.  My ideal dream bib needed a huge button to anchor it to her neck.

I met all three of these requirements (AND MORE) with this no-nonsense bib that probably won't impress your neighbors but will get the job done.  And just look at this little lady...doesn't she look satisfied? Well, she has resigned herself to the fact that she can't yank it off, so that's progress!

Notes:

  • This bib is not for newborns.  It's for ages 1-4 (and older, who am I to judge, heck I even wore it a few times while eating ribs) and will protect their clothes from spaghetti sauce for years to come.
  • If you don't know how to foundation chain, then do 36 chains and HDC across (34 HDC) in Row 1.  But, learn how to foundation chain, seriously, it's cool.

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn. I recommend the one-pound Caron yarn because it holds up really well in the wash.
  • 5 mm hook
  • Button. A big one.
  • Tapestry needle.

Abbreviations:

  • SS: Slip stitch
  • SK: Skip
  • Ch: Chain
  • SC: Single Crochet

Sew button on to this side.  Line it up first with the other strap to make sure it will land over the hole at the right angle.

Then, attach contrasting yarn anywhere and single crochet a border.  Work 3 sc into the corners and adjust as necessary around the curves of the neck straps.

Weave in ends and then you're done!

I have washed these about 25 times so far and they look as good as they did on day one.  You may sell these (but honestly these are simple as pie) but please link back to my original blog post.  I hope you enjoyed this pattern!
