Crochet Pumpkin Blossom (applique)

When one of my Etsy customers ordered a pumpkin hat but wanted something "girly" on it, I immediately set to work on crocheting a pumpkin blossom.  Of course, I had to google what a pumpkin blossom looked like.  Not proud, but I've never been the type to store things photographically in my memory.  What I AM proud of is that I nailed it on my first attempt.  So, voila- the perfect, super-easy, adorable pumpkin blossom for all your fall needs.

Pattern just for the blossom. Here's the pattern for the Whole hat.

Notes:

  • Use beige/yellow/orange yarn for an authentic pumpkin blossom look.

Materials:

  • Tapestry needle to weave in ends

  • Any weight yarn and size hook of your choosing. A larger hook makes a larger blossom. A smaller hook makes a smaller blossom. (But did I have to say that? No, you're smart.)

Abbreviations:

  • SS: Slip stitch

  • Ch: Chain

  • HDC: Half Double Crochet

  • DC: Double Crochet

  • dc2tog: Double crochet 2 together (double crochet decrease). Yarn over (YO) hook, insert hook in stitch(st) , pull up a loop, 3 loops on hook. YO hook, pull through 2 loops. YO hook insert in next st, pull up a loop, 4 loops on hook. YO, pull through 2 loops, 3 loops on hook. YO pull through last 3 loops. One dc2tog made.

  • St(s): Stitch(es)

Instructions:

Magic Ring, 15 HDC in ring.  Join to first HDC, ch2.

First petal

Row 1: DC in same st.  2 DC in next st, 1 DC in next st.  Ch2, turn.  [4 DC]

Row 2: 2 dc2tog.  Ch2, turn.  [2 DC]

Row 3: dc2tog [1 DC].  SS down side of petal and SS into NEXT st on magic ring.

Repeat above instructions for next 4 petals.  When ending the last petal, SS into base of first petal's ch2.  Fasten off, leaving a long enough tail to sew onto your project.  Weave in any loose ends from the magic ring.

Told you it was easy!  What did you sew your pumpkin blossom to? Let me know in the comments!
