Where did crochet even come from??

I started wondering how crochet came about. Who exactly decided to pick up a curved hook-like object and start looping a string around itself? Whoever it is, we owe that person so much gratitude for kicking off this amazing and fulfilling hobby. So where did it come from? The exact origins of crochet are uncertain, as it is difficult to trace its precise history. It is actually believed to have developed independently in different parts of the world over many centuries (sort of like convergent evolution—yeah? Any science nerds here?)

The earliest known examples of crochet-like techniques date back to the 16th century in Europe. But these early forms of crochet were more akin to "knitting with a single hook" rather than the crochet we recognize today.

During the 19th century, crochet began to evolve into its own distinct craft. It gained popularity across Europe, particularly in Ireland, where it became closely associated with the production of lace-like textiles known as "Irish crochet."

Crochet also gained popularity in other parts of Europe and America during the Victorian era. The availability of affordable hooks, threads, and pattern publications contributed to its widespread adoption as a domestic craft. Crochet was embraced by both the upper and middle classes, with women of various social backgrounds engaging in its practice.

Over time, crochet techniques diversified, and different styles and stitches emerged. In the early 20th century, we began to see more intricate designs and motifs, like flowers, edgings, and filet crochet. Today, crochet has continued to evolve and adapt and new stitches are constantly being developed by savvy crocheters like you and me. ;)
